A Very Heavy Mahogany eight-spoke ships wheel “Rosebank Ironworks Edinburgh Brown’s Patent Telemotor and Steam Tiller” with a brass hub and support rails around the wheel, with turned mahogany spokes and handles. Maker of steering systems for the Titanic, Olympic and the Britannic ships, including many steamships. Mahogany and Brass steering wheel by Brown Brothers of Edinburgh. With eight spokes and brass ring embossed with “Rosebank Ironworks Edinburgh Brown’s Patent Telemotor and Steam Tiller” Most Steamships of any size in the early 20th century had a system where the rudder was connected to a Steam Tiller a reciprocating steam engine geared to the rudder post. The most sort after make of steam steering gear was made by Brown Brothers of Edinburgh. It was used on ships as large as the Titanic. In the case of the three Olympic Class ships the steering engines were built by Harland and Wolff themselves but Brown Brothers telemeters were used. The last picture shows a previous owner with the wheel when it was salvaged in the 1950's in Redcar. 36 in. (92 cm.) diameter.
