A superb and very substantial genuine and original World War 2 Royal Navy ship's binnacle compass. Mahogany case, brass fittings and hood, glass port to the front and top, fully gimbal compass. Clinometer fitted on front of unit. Binnacle oil lamp fitted and dated 1943. On brass bolt down feet. The compass itself is marked Patt 0921 D554 . The brass plaque to the front reads 'Patt 196 Z3 - Number 5164W. The brass wings support painted compensating spheres or 'Kelvin Balls'. The front panel opens to reveal the housing for magnetic rods that would have been inserted to adjust the compass, to True North, and Switches Etc. The whole measures a very substantial 140cm (54") x 70cm wide (28") and weighs a lot!
This exceptional item will make a great display piece for nautical decor.
