Very Rare Vintage Museum Collectors Piece. German SS Columbus Brass Gimble Life Boat Compass. The Brass Black Painted Compass is marked around the bezel W Ludolph A.C. or A.G. XXIII 299 Bremerhaven. Complete with original Binnacle Light with burner. This compass was captured from one of the lifeboats after the German liner SS Columbus was Scuttled after a direct order from Hitler, to avoid capture after being stopped in September 1939 by HMS Hyperion off Bermuda. Compass saved by Commander P F Cole DSC RN, Sub Lieutenant in the destroyer HMS HYPERION 1939. Overall height 14" Width 11" Base Diameter 10" Compass diameter 7" Weighs over 9 kilo Great original piece in unrestored condition. A few cracks on the top of the housing (see photos). Glass cracked in the compass light and marks and dents comensurate with age. Please see all photos as these form part of the description
