Vintage Royal Navy signal "U" code flag. This flag is the international maritime code for "You are running into danger". The flag has hanging rope attached. Sewn Panels not printed. 49" x 46" In Vintage condition with no holes etc. Lots of Historical Character for your Nautical Themed Bar, Restaurant, Display and Collection. See Photo to get some idea of size & condition Great original piece. with marks commensurate with age. Adopted by the British Royal Navy in 1803 signal flags remain in use to this day. Sir Home Riggs Popham is commonly cited as being the officer in charge of the creation of the modern day naval signal flag system. Signal flags had been used since antiquity; Popham rationalized the system. There are flags for letters as well as flags that stand for words or even whole sentences. Perhaps the most famous signal ever sent was from Admiral Lord Nelson at the Battle of Trafalgar (21 October 1805).
